After reading several of the critiques, I have to disagree with most. Whereas others see it as a disenchantment of love, I find it highly romantic and sensual.
Anyone who has ever been in a long-term romance knows that sex becomes less and less a necessity and more just... something you do. And yet the couple in this piece are having their romance with their morning reads.
When in a relationship for a very long time you lose the intense need to constantly talk to each other and whisper sweet nothings. But you still want to be around each other. You still want to feel close to your significant other. What better way to feel that closeness than through sex itself?
The love is still there and it's gotten to be so strong the couple don't -need- to arouse each other, they just want to feel close to each other. They don't -need- to feel amorous in order to be loving. They are each getting pleasure from the other even if it doesn't include the average romantic notions.
This piece is shows the silent communication lovers gain from knowing each other for a long enough time.
The first two critiques said it all. The definitions of "casual sex" and this type of sex shown in the picture are different but, in some way, they intersect. Sex is often taken as a priority towards love, a thing so common in society that people are losing their virginity sooner and sooner. Casual sex is an even more common -and absurd to me - thing in society; to have no bonds with someone while doing a thing that (at least I consider) it's so sacred. They didn't care enough to actually pay attention to what they are doing or even to take all clothes off, which shows a lack of bonding and relationship. Both the meaning of the image and the clothes, the very newspapers and the people in the image - his hair, the tattoos, pink hair, among others - show with precision the reality of the society. About the drawing itself, this could almost be a picture, it's so well made, the colors, the anatomy, the poses, the very details are very well made and make of this image a image with a huge impact.
